Everyone knows sleep is important, but how much do you know about deep sleep? When we sleep, we go through about five stages. Stages one and two are light sleep stages, three and four are deep sleep, and the fifth is REM, or rapid eye movement, sleep.
We normally spend about 15-20% of our sleep in deep sleep. During this time, our breathing and heart rate slow. Our body also produces hormones that repair muscle and tissue and strengthen the immune system. Generally speaking, deep sleep improves our health and is essential to our wellbeing. If we don’t get enough of it, we are at an increased risk of stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.
