A study from researchers at Stockholm University recently followed the sleeping patterns of 43,000 people. They concluded that those observed who got an average of five to eight hours of sleep each night had lower mortality rates than those whose sleep average fell outside that range.

If your sleep average during the week is five hours or lower, sleeping for additional hours on the weekend to boost your weekly average could be beneficial.

While some scientists may argue that you can’t directly cancel out the damage from a sleepless night with an extra-long sleep session the next day, Torbjörn Åkerstedt, the study’s lead author, says it’s better to increase sleep hours on the weekend as opposed to not.
