Almost everyone feels it. Between 1 pm and 3 pm each day there tends to be an overwhelming sleepiness due to a dip in alertness. If you’re fighting sleep in the mid-afternoon and feel like taking a nap, do it. It’s actually good for you.
Napping is beneficial because it makes us feel less sleepy and more alert, along with improving cognitive functioning, reaction times, short-term memory, and our mood. Research has also found that those who regularly nap report feeling more alert after a brief nap in the afternoon when compared to people who only nap occasionally during the week.
A separate research study found that motor learning is significantly greater following a brief nap in the afternoon when compared to non-nappers.
