Get Sprung

Innersprings are the cream inside the Oreo, the peanut butter in your sandwich, the cheddar in your Combo. They are the foundation of a mattress that makes the mattress what it is. They may lack fancy commercials with glasses of unspilled wine, but innerspring sleep systems paved the way for the mattress industry we have today, and still remain the most popular choice among Americans (80 percent of Americans trust their sleep and wellbeing to innerspring sleep systems).

The first commercially successful bed spring was patented in 1885 by J.P. Leggett. Before that, mattresses were filled with anything from leaves, straw, and hay, to down and feathers. Prior to the inclusion of innersprings, beds were great homes for bugs and other animals. The invention of the cotton mattress and innersprings helped combat extra nighttime visitors...thank goodness for innersprings, right? Today there are many types of innersprings used in mattresses, as Legget & Platt and others continue to invest time and money into researching technological advances that will further improve these kinds of sleep systems.

Because innerspring mattresses have been around the longest of any modern mattress style, they are considered to be “standard” mattresses. If you know the facts, however, there really isn’t anything standard about them. For instance, did you know that innerspring sleep systems do a better job of dissipating heat than air or foam sleep surfaces? And did you know that 68 percent of consumers prefer innerspring surfaces for intimacy? Other benefits of innerspring mattresses include, but are not limited to:

  • Healthy spinal alignment
  • Easy to maintain
  • Good back support
  • Ability to add mattress toppers (such as foam, down, etc.)
  • Durability
  • Stays firmer longer than other sleep surfaces.
